Book Blog

I’m a former teacher who returned to grad school and realized the literacy skills I had been teaching to second and fifth graders were just as useful to anyone, at any age. To pay the bills during grad school, I began part-time tutoring SAT/ACT test prep, and since these tests are meant to assess college readiness, I could give concrete examples of how the skills I was teaching them were the very ones I was applying to my classes. Skills like skimming key parts of the text, using critical thinking to analyze, and annotating were helping me manage a full course-load with infinite reading lists.

I used to consume and discard books, getting a sense of accomplishment purely from the quantity I was reading, not the quality of the interaction. Using the skills above, I’ve become a more thoughtful and critical reader.

I’ve come to realize some of my favorite strategies to use (and teach!) may be useful for the recreational and avid adult reader alike. I hope you find that to be the case for you.

    Literary Tyranny

“The best part about any office job is the fact that…” comedian Sheng Wang ends this sentence in his 2022 Netflix special with “you can print.” The audience knowingly laughs at an office worker’s delight in this seemingly trivial and inconsequential act. Yet many of us (myself included*) have printers at home. Ours, however, are reserved “for emergency use only” and…… Read more
